Description: The Michigan House Democratic Caucus is seeking an experienced, self-motivated and detail-oriented Communications Advisor to join its Communications Department. The successful candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills to support our department’s overall strategy. This is a great opportunity to put your skills to the test in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

As a Communications Advisor, you’ll create a variety of communications materials including media releases, op-eds, articles and talking points, and perform media relations duties. More specifically, you’ll get to:

 

Write and edit external content for a diverse group of House members, including but not limited to media releases, talking points, op-eds and newsletter articles Establish relationships with members and office staff based on constant communication and regular meetings to share resources and provide support Coordinate interview requests for member offices and, in consultation with the Lead Communications Advisor, Press Secretary and Chief Strategy and Communications Officer, provide guidance and talking points to members Organize press conferences for member offices, including making pitch calls to local, regional and national reporters Pitch op-eds for member offices in order to place them in the best possible media markets Serve as a liaison between other communications team members and member offices on various digital, video, photographic and graphical requests Develop and implement proactive media relations strategy, seeking placements in print, broadcast and online media Coordinate all public relations activities Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts Manage media inquiries and interview requests Develop and implement media pitching strategies Work alongside the social media coordinators to develop social media content for the caucus and member pages

 

This position is based in Lansing, Michigan, reports to the Lead Communications Advisor and provides the opportunity to engage directly with policymakers, influencers and key leaders in the government, nonprofit, community, civic and nonprofit sectors throughout the state and across the country.

Salary Range: $42,000 - $45,000 based on experience

Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to conceptualize, create and execute strategic communications programs and materials, effectively join a highly-talented and professional communications team and engage with elected and senior leaders, colleagues and staff members. Candidates should also be committed to employing best-in-class, innovative strategies to confidently accomplish desired outcomes, while demonstrating the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of public relations, marketing or communications experience
  • BA/MA degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications or a related discipline
  • A proven track record of consistently meeting established deadlines and using time effectively while managing multiple, simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, project management and problem-solving skills with impeccable multi-tasking and decision-making abilities
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with a friendly and professional demeanor
  • Knowledge of AP style, and a high attention to detail
  • Knowledge of current events and Michigan House Democrats’ priorities
  • A passion for working for progressive causes and elected officials Proven working experience in public relations required
  • Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns at both a local and national level
  • Strong relationships with both local and national business and industry media outlets
  • Experience in acting as a spokesperson; comfortable and skilled in both broadcast and print media interviews
  • Solid experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Event planning experience
  • An ongoing interest in continued learning and adaptation based on best practices
  • Prior political, public affairs or campaign experience is helpful
