Legislative Fellowship

2019 Winter/Spring Term

Caucus: Republican, Democratic

General Description: The Michigan House of Representatives is currently looking to fill several paid Fellowship positions for the 2019 winter/spring academic semester. Selected candidates will have the unique opportunity to assist their designated Host offices and their staff in general office operations including constituent relations, communications, policy research and analysis, legal research, and tracking legislation. Additional activities may include attending committee hearings and various community events as well as assisting with some event planning. Selected candidates will also be expected to complete a curriculum of tasks and projects during the term with the assistance of supervising staff. In addition to gaining valuable hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, the Legislative Fellows will be assigned a professional Mentor and have the opportunity to attend exclusive events sponsored by the Legislative Fellowship Program. Pay Range: $15.00 per hour.  
(College credit may also be available.  See your school’s Internship Coordinator or Academic Advisor.)

Work Schedule: Monday, January 7, 2019 - Friday, April 26, 2019.  Hours are negotiable, however a minimum of 15 hours or a maximum of 20 hours per week must be maintained. Applicant availability should include at least two of the three Session days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays).

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be current students enrolled in law school, a master’s degree program, or have sufficient course credits to achieve a senior status within their undergraduate program.  Individuals who have graduated from these degree programs within the 12 months preceding the start of the term are also eligible to apply.  A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.  Applicants must also possess a positive and professional attitude, desire to learn, and a good work ethic.  Previous office experience, including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, telephone skills, writing skills, and knowledge of the Legislature are preferred but not required.  Current and former Legislative Interns are encouraged to apply.
