Caucus: Democratic

Description: The Michigan House Democratic Caucus is seeking a Minority Legal Counselor.  This person will advise members of the House Democratic Caucus leadership and membership regarding legal, ethical, and procedural matters.  The Legal Counsel will provide day-to-day oversight of House proceedings, knowledge of House rules and parliamentary procedures, advise on personnel matters including hiring and firing, and be a resource on election law matters.  The ideal candidate is a person with strong communication and leadership skills and the ability to participate in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Additional Responsibilities: The Minority Legal Counsel must have familiarity with House rules, policies, and guidelines as well as parliamentary procedure, employment laws, and Article IV of the Michigan Constitution. They will work with the Policy Director and policy team to monitor and analyze active legislation from a legal perspective as needed, as well as stay educated on legal developments and jurisprudence relevant to the State Legislature.

Salary Range: $119,000 - $133,000

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of and experience in the legislative process required. Knowledge of and experience in employment law, criminal law, election law, campaign finance law administrative law, and Article IV of the Michigan Constitution preferred.  The position also requires the highest degree of confidentiality. To qualify for the position of Legal Counsel, a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and an active member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan. The individual must possess strong legal, writing, analysis, and oral presentation skills, as well as the temperament and personality to function effectively in a fast-paced, political environment. Strong preference will be given to individuals with client, litigation and/or state government experience.
