This is a full-time position in the Lansing office of the Michigan House Democratic  Caucus. The Press Secretary will serve as the spokesperson for Minority Leader Donna Lasinski and the  democratic caucus and be the only staff person “on the record.” The Press Secretary will also be  responsible for the following:  

  • Identifies and capitalizes on press opportunities for the leader and caucus members.  
  • Coordinates and executes press conferences and media avails, including outreach to outside  stakeholders for support and participation. 
  • Works with communications team to prepare speeches, press releases, op-eds, talking points,and statements for the leader and caucus members.  
  • Serves as advisor to the leader on matters of media and communications. 
  • Anticipates, identifies, and troubleshoots issues of concern or significance; exercises discretion to provide timely information and necessary updates across multiple stakeholders.  Collaborates and works in cooperation with the caucus communications director, who reports to the chief of staff.  

Salary Range: $45,000 - $65,000

Minimum Qualifications: Previous experience serving as a spokesperson, working knowledge of the  legislative process and understanding of policy development; existing media relationships and proven ability to build new relationships with media; exceptional writing and editing skill;, excellent interpersonal  skills; thorough message development experience; strategic issue management; knowledge and  relevance of social media; experience in crisis management and/or rapid-response activities; ability to  work in a dynamic, fast paced environment with a diverse staff and caucus members; strong work ethic,  strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines. Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent experience in the industry.
